Why welds need cleaning

TIG and MIG welding stainless steel leaves a heat-affected zone where the thin chromium oxide layer that makes the metal 'stainless' has been disrupted. This shows up as a blue, brown or black heat tint — and, more importantly, leaves the surface more vulnerable to corrosion until it's treated.

  • What electrolytic cleaning does

    A cleaning pad or brush carries a mild electrolyte solution and a low-voltage current across the weld. The current strips away the discoloured oxide layer and encourages the chromium in the surrounding steel to re-passivate — restoring the corrosion-resistant layer without removing base material.

  • Acid Pickling

    Effective, but uses hazardous acid pastes and gels that need careful handling, ventilation and disposal.

  • Mechanical Polishing

    Removes material rather than restoring it, can leave an inconsistent finish, and is slow on long weld runs.

  • Electrolytic Cleaning
